Affco Back In Venison

10-09-2007 | webmaster

The entry of another processor seeking venison supply creates a challenge to the venison industry as it seeks to build long-term stability and avoid painful boom-bust cycles.

AFFCO began processing venison at its Rangiuru plant near Te Puke in mid-August, after not handling venison for 12 years. The publicly listed company put out an immediate offer of 20 cents above any other schedule.

Long-time industry observers say they cannot recall a previous example of a processing company making such an offer to venison producers in this way – as a public announcement and as a matter of policy. This makes AFFCO’s move back in to venison processing appear assertive.

However, AFFCO says it’s a way of “highlighting to deer farmers that AFFCO is back in the venison business”.

“AFFCO has entered the market openly and transparently,” say Weston and his team. “We are a responsible marketer without the pressure, financial or otherwise, to quit stock in a way that disrupts the market.”
